For most of the offseason, everyone thought Jimmy Garoppolo was done as a 49er. And that includes 49ers General Manager John Lynch.
Lynch said today that he was expecting to trade Garoppolo and had serious talks with multiple teams at the Scouting Combine. But once Garoppolo had shoulder surgery, those talks ended.
“Combine time, there were really serious talks,” Lynch said, via Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News. “Probably 2-3 teams that I felt this was going to happen. That’s when news broke [of shoulder surgery]. Then things went where they went.”
Ultimately, with Garoppolo now backing up Trey Lance, Lynch said he’s satisfied.
“I’m glad we’ve arrived where we’re at,” Lynch said. “We’re happy he’s here.”
Was that really what happened?
Were they really teens that would trade to take on his 25 million contract?
Or is he saying this to try to save face?
had he been healthy the only way he would be traded is if he took a pay cut.
“We’re happy we couldn’t trade the guy we spent six months trying to trade…”
how does the gm not know that his starting qb is getting surgery????
49ers have been snake bit by injuries at the QB spot which derailed our playoff runs. Having some insurance behind Trey while he learns the ropes is a great position to be in on a Super Bowl ready team.
Keep on revising the narrative, Lynch. Maybe you’ll get lucky and invent a really good one!
A good GM has to be able to play the hand he’s dealt, and the Lynch/Shanahan team is doing fine. Garoppolo is a heck of an insurance policy, and they didn’t have to pay top dollar. If Garoppolo ends up playing a lot he’ll make a lot more money, and the 49ers will be more than happy to pay for those services. Lynch didn’t have any front office or scouting experience when they hired him, but I think he’s proving that experience is way over-rated.
Oh,u haven’t heard???. Jimmy turns into Casper the friendly ghost during the offseason..
You’d think lynch would be used to j glass always being injured.
All’s well that ends well. Isn’t that all that really matters in the long run. Most involved all appear to be pleased – what more can you ask.
Shoulder surgeries are tricky. For every Drew Brees who had a career despite shoulder surgery there are a dozen who have such who lose something. I don’t blame other teams for being a bit gun shy.
He felt a trade was going to happen?.Sounds like some denial and blame. Sounds like BS. If a quarterback with juice had shoulder surgery, would trade talks stop? I grew up going to communion and confession. The more I listen to John Lynch the more I hear the males of my family. constantly taking subtle digs, never taking ownership, while fearing emotional confrontation.
Oh sure, trade him then he gets the surgery and screws the new team. Stand-up guy here this Lynch.
Everyone is happy. It’s a win-win.
Until Lance stumbles and the locker room wants Jimmy to start…
justmymeaninglessopinion says: September 1, 2022 at 2:05 pm how does the gm not know that his starting qb is getting surgery???? ————- Because Jimmy was no longer the starting QB and because garapollo did not inform the team. They don’t have a tracker on him you know.
It’s incredulous! Jimmy needed surgery and he got surgery? Honestly, does Lynch hear the words coming out of his mouth? He must be one heck of a used car salesman to think he could orchestrate a trade when a physical would indicate that Jimmy needed surgery. Stunning!
