Maryam Pousti of studiopousti has created a new bookshelf unit as part of her Cheft Collection, made of twelve interlocking elements which slide in and out of each other through specifically designed grooves, inspired by the Persian architectural patterns seen in domes of traditional houses.

Cheft Bookshelf unit recently won the Best Shelving Unit of the Year Award at the 2022 Prize Designs for Modern Furniture and Lighting from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and Global Design News.

As Maryam Pousti states “the beauty of the bookcase lies in the fact that they serve both as geometrical structures and ornaments.” As the rest of the objects in this collection are seen as flexible yet rigid symmetrical patterns that are functional as well as decorative.

Cheft Bookcase is constructed from sheet materials which makes it possible for alternatives to be created through minor alterations in the way the elements intersect.

No nails, glue, or screws are needed to assemble the objects.

The bookshelf is made of twelve interlocking elements, the grooves of the bookshelf, interlock to create a self-supporting structure that stands on its own legs without the need to attach to walls, therefore, it can also be used as a multifunctional room partition, outdoors and indoors at home or office environments. Minimal design, fast assembly, use of only one material, and compact packaging make these objects highly versatile, intrinsically mobile, and easily manufactured on small and large scales.
