A 41-year-old Tampa man had his hands full as he attempted to make off with a cash register and beer as he tried to flee a local convenience store, according to a Citrus County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit.

Lonell Aaron Abercrombie was arrested just after midnight the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 16, after dispatch responded to report of a trespassing subject at the combination Circle K and Dunkin Donuts at 9406 S. Suncoast Blvd., Homosassa.

Upon arrival, the witness told deputies that Abercrombie had picked up one of the cash registers and was caught as he tried to walk away with it, per the arrest affidavit. When the witness confronted him, Abercrombie said he was a new employee and was looking for “something.” He then dropped the register and left.

After talking with the witness, deputies identified Abercrombie outside of the building. As they approached, Abercrombie walked away from them and threw two beer bottles he was holding toward the road in an attempt to hide that he had also taken them from the nearby convenience store just prior to this incident, according to the arrest affidavit. The Shell worker confirmed he never paid for the beer.

Deputies also found a bent flat-head screw driver in his pocket, which are commonly used to pry open lock boxes.

Abercrombie then told the deputies that he was picking up the cash register to get his tips. When asked if that was typically how he got his tips, he said the company owed him his money and he was getting it, per the arrest affidavit.

The witness confirmed that tips are placed in cups with the worker’s names on them and none of them are authorized to remove the registers.

Despite Abercrombie’s persistent aggressive behavior toward the deputies, including spitting on and verbally threatening them, deputies handcuffed him and took him to Citrus County Detention Facility for booking and processing on the charges of two counts retail petit theft (value $100 or less), possession of burglary tools, tampering with evidence and resisting officer without violence. His bond was set at $9,000.
